5 Causes of Crooked Teeth in Babies

01/08/2020

A person’s teeth are an important factor in the physical beauty of a person and every parent wants to see their children’s happy bright smiles. Crooked teeth not only cause difficulty in chewing but also affect your appearance and the development of permanent teeth.

If you may be wondering why your baby teeth are growing crooked, here are a few common reasons:

  • Wrong dental habits
Babies tend to put everything they find into their mouths as this is one of the ways they explore their worlds. Unfortunately, this could be a habit that causes your little one to develop crooked teeth. Some other bad dental habits that contribute to your baby developing crooked teeth are pacifiers, thumb sucking and prolonged bottle feeding.

  • Undeveloped jaw
Your baby’s jaw is still growing and developing, so its small size makes it hard to hold all the teeth without looking overcrowded and slightly crooked.

  • The role of genetics
If you or your partner have crooked teeth, the genes for crooked teeth are likely to pass on to your baby.

  • Sleeping on the stomach
Allowing your baby to sleep on his tummy is one of the reasons that encourages crooked teeth as it puts pressure on his cheeks and mouth. While you may not notice the change immediately, over time the crookedness becomes more evident. So, if you notice that your baby is falling asleep during tummy time, make sure to turn him over onto his back.

  • Tumour Or A Cyst
In the rarest of cases, there may be a tumour or cyst inside your baby’s mouth, leading to protruding front teeth. Consult with your dentist on this matter so that you will be able to get treatment for your baby.

The Pediatrics – Neonatology Department of American International Hospital (AIH) offers a wide range of services including: Health check-up; Vaccination; Monitoring child’s physical and mental development; Consultation on nutrition; and other diagnosis and treatment services.

At AIH, for the purpose of preventing cross-contamination, the pediatric clinic is properly designed and divided into two separate areas: area for symptomatic children and area for well children. Children with suspected symptoms will be quickly removed from common waiting area and placed in a separate examination room on arrival.
