EAR NOSE THROAT CANCER SCREENING PACKAGE. WHO SHOULD UNDERGO EARLY SCREENING?

Nasopharyngeal cancer is one of the five most common cancers in Viet Nam, and is at the top of the Head, Neck and Ear Nose Throat cancer list. Experts recommend that people from 30 to 60 years old should have Ear – Nose – Throat screening done at least once a year, especially when having prolonged abnormal symptoms such as headache, tinnitus, nosebleed, nasal congestion, etc.
 
► Certain groups should have routine Ear – Nose – Throat screening:
 
  • Those infected with EBV (Epstein – Barr) or in close contact with EBV-infected person.
  • Those with family history (father/mother/siblings) of nasopharyngeal cancer.
  • Individuals with a habit of smoking, frequent alcohol consumption, or using stimulants.
  • Heavy consumers of salted and fermented food: pickles, smoked meat, salted fish (which contains Nitrosamine - a carcinogen)
  • People having work environments that are exposed to smoke, dust, chemicals, radiation, rubber, and synthetic resins.

Ear – Nose – Throat cancer’s symptoms are not typical and easily mistaken with respiratory infections such as pharyngitis, rhinitis, etc.

Several early signs for Ear – Nose – Throat cancer that should be noticed:
  • Prolonged headache with unclear cause.
  • Tinnitus, or hearing loss.
  • Lateral or bilateral nasal congestion, completely or partially.
  • Bright red nosebleeds or mucus mixed with pinkish blood.
  • Spitting up blood or trace of blood in the phlegm.
  • Global sensation or painful swallowing as if fish bone stuck in the throat.
  • Painful swallowing radiating to the ear.
  • Detecting a few centimeters large, painless, gradually enlarging lymph node in the neck.

When noticing abnormal symptoms in the Ear Nose and Throat, patients should visit Ear – Nose – Throat Department, have endoscopy and necessary laboratory tests done for timely treatment.
