14/03/2022

Bladder is an organ where urine is stored before flushing out by urinating. According to Master, 2nd degree specialist Ngo Thanh Mai – AIH’s Urology department describes, cystitis is a condition of inflammation which occurs at the bladder, caused by bacterial infection in most of cases. It usually causes patients feel painful, irritation and may lead to serious health problems if infection radiates to the kidney or sepsis.

► Common symptoms of cystitis:

  • Frequent and urgent urge to urinate
  • A burning sensation when urinating
  • Dysuria
  • Passingfrequent, small amounts of urine
  • Blood in the urine (hematuria)
  • Cloudy or strong-smelling urine
  • Pelvic discomfort
  • A feeling of pressure in the lower abdomen
  • Low-grade fever, occasional chills

► Cystitis is caused by:

  • Bacterial cystitis. Escherichia coli (E. coli) is the most common.
  • Specific bacteria - induced cystitis as tuberculosis bacteria.
  • Other causes include interstitial, drug-induced, radiation, foreign-body, chemical cystitis or complications of other conditions, such as diabetes, urolithiasis, enlarged prostate or spinal cord injury – induced chronic urinary retention, long duration of urinary catheterization.

► Risk factors of cystitis:

  • The risk of females is higher than males: with sexual intercourse, use certain types of birth control, in pregnancy,  experience in menopause, intestinal infection, gynecological infection.
  • Males and females: have stones in urinary tract or prostatic hypertrophy in males, immunodeficiency induced by certain conditions such as diabetes, HIV…. or cancer treatment, long duration of urinary catheterization.

► Symptoms of cystitis or urinary tract infection:

  • Fever and chills
  • Nausea, vomit. If urinate urgently, pain occurs usually within several hours or longer, blood is found in urine.

If you have ever got urinary tract infection, you should go to hospital for examination when similar symptoms are recurrent as previously.

As suspicious cystitis you may need consultation immediately to have diagnosis and treatment promptly. Self-treatment without doctor’s advice is absolutely prohibited, because those bacteria which cause acute cystitis have been resisting many types of antibiotics, thereby the condition will progress more complicated.

► Cystitis prevention:

  • Drink plenty of water everyday, eat, drink moderately and keep all daily activities regularly.
  • Keep genital part hygienically everyday. At the age of sexual activity, it needs to clean the external genitalia before and after intercourse.
  • If you feel the urge to urinate, do not delay it.
  • Avoid using vaginal suppositories or hygiene deodorant sprays.
  • When having urolithiasis, benign prostatic  hyperplasia  in males, you need to comply with regimen strictly and follow doctor’s advice.
  • For females, wipe from front to back after urinating or defecating.
  • Daily exercise is recommended to make excretion and urine circulation easily.
