BABY TEETHING FEVER: SIGNS AND TIPS TO HANDLE
Teething is one of the most important and exciting milestones of your baby’s development. However, teething will make your baby uncomfortable for some days. He/she may experience a light fever. Therefore, it is necessary for you to know about the signs of teething and how to handle it in order to comfort your baby.
When does teething begin?
Teething normally begins when babies are between 6 and 10 months. For some babies, teething can begin earlier when they are around 4 months.
It is abnormal if your baby does not have any teeth by the time he/she is 15 months old. Talk to your doctor for proper examination.
Symptoms of teething
Some typical symptoms you may notice when your baby begins teething:
- Drooling
- Irritability
- Cries more than usual
- Biting
- Chewing
- Red and swollen gums
- Changes in feeding amount
- Inability to sleep
- Loss of appetite if your baby already eats solid foods
- Diarrhea or fever
- Light fever (< 38oC)
If your baby has fever (>38oC) and diarrhea, something else other than teething may be causing the fever.
Tips to make your baby’s teething easier
Teething is always uncomfortable. Make it easier for your baby with following tips:
- Feed your baby with biscuits if your baby already has solid foods
- Maintain good oral hygiene, wash your hands before rubbing your baby’s gums
- Feed your baby with a rubber teething ring (read instructions carefully before use. Avoid the one with liquid inside as it can break and your baby swallows the liquid)
- Let your baby wear bib if he/she drools a lot
- Put sharp edge toys away as these can hurt your baby’s gums
- Do not use aspirin under any circumstances
- Do not rub your baby’s gums with alcohol
